First Thursday, of each month
1st Thursday is an evening of art and culture in downtown Santa Barbara. On the first Thursday of each month, participating galleries and art-related venues offer free access to visual and performing art in a fun and social environment from 5-8pm. 1st Thursday venues feature attractions such as art openings, live music, artists' receptions, lectures, wine tastings and hands-on activities.
Note: Transportation is easy via Bus 24X.

One option is to join the "Art Crawl" group to tour the galleries with an expert guide. Participation is free. Details:
The Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative, in partnership with Downtown Santa Barbara, will lead a curated Art Crawl through 1st Thursday festivities. The Art Crawl starts at 5:30 pm in de la Guerra Plaza on the back steps of City Hall (735 Anacapa Street, then head around to the back).

You can get there on the 24X bus that leaves Elings Hall at 4:38PM and arrives at the Transit Center at 5PM. From there it's a 10 minute walk to 735 Anacapa St.

(3) Art/Photography exhibit "Exposed!" Jewish Federation Center Santa Barbara, opening event
January 21st 2018, 1pm-3pm. The exhibit stays open for a couple of months after that.

Arnoldi's Cafe - Little Italian restaurant in historic stone building from 1930's with seating and bocce ball out back.

Beachside Bar & Cafe, down the hill from KITP overlooking Goleta beach.

The Boathouse - Seafood place right on Hendry's beach.

Brewhouse - Pretty much what you expect - beer and hearty food. For large groups, they require a pre-selected menu with only 4 entree choices.

Carlitos - Nice Mexican restaurant on State Street.

Edomasa - Sushi.

Olio Pizzeria - Highest rated pizza place in town, but kind of pricey (up to $20 for individual pie).

Opal - California/Fusion.

Music:


The Met: Live in HD

  • The Metropolitan Opera broadcasts HD simulcasts of operas to movie theaters all over the world. The live performances are Saturday matinees in New York, so they start here at 9:55am and are shown locally at the historic Arlington Theater in downtown SB and, in a smaller venue at Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West in Montecito. It will be rebroadcast again at Hahn Hall at 6:00pm on Saturday and at 2:00pm on Sunday.


Jazz & Folk Music

  • SB has but one place that features jazz and folk: SOhO Restaurant & Music Club .They have decent food if you want to eat before/during a performance.


Sport Activities

  • If you are interested in swimming/running/weightlifting or playing some sports like table tennis or soccer, you may wish to join UCSB's Recreation Center. KITP visitors pay the Community rate.
